Mission Statement:

The mission of the Brown Soil & Water Conservation District is to provide the leadership in promoting and protecting the integrity of Brown County's soil, water and other natural resources through technical assistance and education.

Goldie Shannon High Memorial Woods Fund

In November  2006 the Brown Soil and Water Conservation District established a fund within the Brown County Foundation for the preservation, maintenance, and improvements needed to utilize the Goldie Shannon High Memorial Woods as an Outdoor Education Center.

This unique 12 acre tract of land in Green Township, Brown County, Ohio contains an old growth forest with White Oak Trees estimated to be 250 years old.  The land was donated by William H. and Theodore K. High in memory of their mother.

Through this extremely generous donation, current and future generations will have the opportunity to learn about conservation, natural resources and the interconnectedness of our world from land that will remain as it was when the first settlers arrived.

The Mission of the Brown County Foundation is to enhance the quality of life in Brown County by supporting a broad variety of organizations and causes which include, but are not limited to:

  •  Assisting public, educational and charitable institutions.

  •  Supporting public recreation, conservation and environmental improvements.

District officials chose to create the Goldie Shannon High Memorial Woods Fund within the Brown County Foundation for purposes of the future.  Setting up a fund through the Foundation allowed the District to:

  • Create a perpetual charitable fund.

  •     Assure for the fund, the use of community resources for intelligent philanthropic planning.

  •     Have a perpetual governing board of informed citizens, serving without pay, to supervise the use of the fund, guided by present instructions and the needs of the future.
